Sodium chloride

Posted on March 10, 2026 by Admin

Sodium chloride is a chemical compound commonly known as table salt. It is made of two elements: sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl), forming the formula NaCl. 🧂

Basic Properties

  • Chemical formula: NaCl
  • Type: Ionic compound
  • Appearance: White crystalline solid
  • Taste: Salty
  • Solubility: Easily dissolves in water

Structure

In sodium chloride:

  • Sodium atoms lose one electron and become Na⁺ ions.
  • Chlorine atoms gain one electron and become Cl⁻ ions.
  • These oppositely charged ions arrange in a cubic crystal lattice held together by strong electrostatic forces.

Common Uses

  1. Food seasoning and preservation 🍲
  2. De-icing roads in winter
  3. Medical saline solutions
  4. Food processing and pickling
  5. Industrial uses (production of chlorine, sodium hydroxide, etc.)

Natural Sources

  • Seawater (about 3.5% salt) 🌊
  • Rock salt deposits underground
  • Salt lakes and evaporated sea salt

Importance for Humans

Small amounts of sodium chloride are essential for the body because sodium helps:

  • Maintain fluid balance
  • Support nerve signals
  • Help muscle function

However, excessive salt intake can contribute to health problems such as Hypertension (high blood pressure).

Interesting Fact

Salt has been so valuable historically that it influenced trade and economies, and the word “salary” is believed to be linked to salt payments given to Roman soldiers. 🏛️
