Human heart

Posted on March 6, 2026 by Admin

The human heart is a muscular organ that functions as the body’s central pump, circulating blood throughout the body to supply oxygen and nutrients while removing waste products. It’s roughly the size of a fist and located slightly left of the center of the chest, behind the sternum.

Structure of the Human Heart

  1. Chambers (4 total)
    • Right atrium – receives deoxygenated blood from the body via the superior and inferior vena cava.
    • Right ventricle – pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery.
    • Left atrium – receives oxygenated blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins.
    • Left ventricle – pumps oxygenated blood to the entire body via the aorta.
  2. Valves
    • Tricuspid valve – between right atrium and right ventricle.
    • Pulmonary valve – between right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
    • Mitral (bicuspid) valve – between left atrium and left ventricle.
    • Aortic valve – between left ventricle and aorta.
  3. Major Blood Vessels
    • Aorta – carries oxygen-rich blood to the body.
    • Superior and inferior vena cava – carry deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart.
    • Pulmonary arteries and veins – transport blood between the heart and lungs.
  4. Heart Wall Layers
    • Endocardium – inner lining of the chambers.
    • Myocardium – muscular middle layer responsible for contraction.
    • Pericardium – protective outer sac around the heart.

How the Heart Works (Circulation Cycle)

  1. Deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium.
  2. Blood flows into the right ventricle, then is pumped to the lungs via the pulmonary artery to get oxygen.
  3. Oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium.
  4. Blood flows into the left ventricle, which pumps it through the aorta to the body.

This is known as the cardiac cycle, consisting of systole (contraction) and diastole (relaxation).

Interesting Facts

  • The heart beats about 100,000 times per day.
  • Average blood pumped daily: ~7,500 liters.
  • The left ventricle has the thickest wall because it pumps blood to the entire body.

💡 Tip: Maintaining a healthy heart involves regular exercise, a balanced diet, controlling blood pressure, avoiding smoking, and managing stress.

I can also make a simple diagram showing the heart’s chambers, valves, and blood flow if you want a visual guide—it’s super helpful for studying or explaining circulation.

Do you want me to make that diagram?
