Chest X-ray

Posted on March 10, 2026 by Admin

A Chest X-ray is a common medical imaging test that uses a small amount of radiation to take pictures of the structures inside the chest. It helps doctors see the lungs, heart, airways, ribs, and blood vessels. 🩻

What a Chest X-ray Can Detect

Doctors use it to help diagnose or monitor conditions such as:

  • Pneumonia (lung infection)
  • Tuberculosis
  • Lung cancer
  • Heart failure
  • Pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs)
  • Broken ribs or chest injuries

How the Procedure Works

  1. You stand or lie in front of the X-ray machine.
  2. The technician asks you to take a deep breath and hold it.
  3. The machine takes the image in a few seconds.
  4. Usually two views are taken:
    • Front view (PA view)
    • Side view (lateral view)

The test is quick and painless and usually takes about 5–10 minutes.

Preparation

  • Remove jewelry or metal objects from the chest area.
  • Wear a hospital gown if required.
  • Tell the doctor if you might be pregnant.

Is It Safe?

Yes, the radiation dose is very small, and the benefits of diagnosis usually outweigh the risks. Doctors only order it when medically necessary.
