Vintage seafood soul food recipe

Posted on April 18, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic vintage-style seafood soul food recipe that feels straight out of an old Southern kitchen:

🍤 Southern Seafood Gumbo (Vintage Soul Food Style)

This is a rich, slow-cooked stew from Louisiana Creole and Southern Black cooking traditions.

🧾 Ingredients

Base (roux):

  • ½ cup vegetable oil or butter
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

Gumbo:

  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1 green bell pepper (chopped)
  • 2 celery stalks (chopped)
  • 4 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (optional, Creole style)
  • 4 cups seafood stock (or chicken stock)
  • 250g shrimp (peeled)
  • 250g white fish (chunks)
  • 1 cup okra (fresh or frozen)
  • 1–2 tsp Cajun seasoning
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Hot sauce (optional)

To serve:

  • Cooked white rice
  • Chopped green onions
  • Fresh parsley

🍳 Instructions

1. Make the roux (the soul of gumbo):
Heat oil in a heavy pot. Whisk in flour slowly. Cook on medium-low, stirring constantly, until it turns a deep brown color (like chocolate). This takes 15–25 minutes.

2. Build the flavor base:
Add onion, bell pepper, and celery (“holy trinity” of Southern cooking). Cook until soft. Add garlic and stir for 1–2 minutes.

3. Add liquids & spices:
Pour in stock, tomatoes (if using), bay leaf, and seasonings. Stir well.

4. Simmer:
Let it gently simmer for 30–40 minutes so flavors deepen.

5. Add seafood:
Add fish first (it needs a little longer), then shrimp and okra. Cook 8–10 minutes until shrimp turns pink.

6. Finish:
Adjust salt, pepper, and spice. Remove bay leaf.

🍽️ Serve like a true Southern table:

Spoon hot gumbo over fluffy white rice and top with green onions and parsley. Add hot sauce if you like heat.

🧠 Vintage soul food note:

Traditional seafood gumbo varies by family—some add crab, sausage, or skip tomatoes entirely (Creole vs Cajun style). The “vintage” feel comes from slow cooking, dark roux, and bold seasoning layered over time.
