Vertical ridges on fingernails

Posted on April 14, 2026 by Admin

Nail vertical ridges are common lines that run from the base of the nail (cuticle) to the tip. In most cases, they are normal and not a sign of disease.

🧠 What they usually mean

πŸ‘ Most common cause: normal aging

  • Very common after age 30–40
  • Nails grow more slowly and unevenly over time
  • Ridges become more noticeable with age

πŸ’§ Other harmless causes

  • Dry nails or dehydration
  • Frequent hand washing or chemicals
  • Minor nail trauma (bumping, biting, manicure damage)

πŸ₯— Possible (less common) nutritional links

Sometimes ridges may be more noticeable with:

  • low iron
  • low vitamin B12
  • low protein intake

πŸ‘‰ But usually there are other symptoms too, not just nail ridges.

⚠️ When to pay attention

See a doctor if ridges come with:

  • nail color changes (dark, blue, or very pale nails)
  • pain, swelling, or thickening
  • splitting nails or sudden major changes

❀️ Bottom line

Vertical ridges are usually a normal aging change, not a disease. Most people have them at some point in life.

If you want, describe your nails (smooth or deep ridges, one nail or many), and I can tell you if it sounds normal or needs checking.
