Posted on March 17, 2026 by Admin

🍓 Strawberry ‘Senga Sengana’

Strawberry ‘Senga Sengana’ is a well-known, traditional strawberry variety that originated in Germany in the 1950s. It’s especially popular in Europe for its strong flavor, deep red color, and excellent suitability for jams and freezing.

🌱 Key Characteristics

  • Type: June-bearing (produces one large crop per season)
  • Fruit size: Medium
  • Color: Dark red, both outside and inside
  • Flavor: Very sweet and aromatic with a rich strawberry taste
  • Texture: Soft and juicy
  • Harvest time: Usually mid-season (late spring to early summer)

🍽️ Best Uses

Because of its intense flavor, this variety is often used for:

  • Strawberry jam and preserves
  • Desserts and cakes
  • Frozen strawberries
  • Fruit sauces and syrups

It’s less common in supermarkets because the berries are soft and delicate, which makes them harder to transport.

🌿 Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8 hours daily)
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter
  • Spacing: About 30–40 cm (12–16 in) between plants
  • Water: Regular watering, especially during fruit development
  • Climate: Performs best in temperate climates

⚠️ Things to Know

  • Plants produce many runners, which helps them spread quickly.
  • The fruit is very flavorful but not very firm, so it should be eaten or processed soon after harvesting.
  • Good resistance to cold, making it suitable for northern regions.

💡 Interesting fact:
This variety became one of the most important strawberries for commercial jam production in Europe because of its deep color and strong aroma.
