Something keeps digging a huge tunnel under the concrete slab of my garden shed. I’ve tried filling it in, but it’s back every morning and I’m worried the foundation will crack. What would you do?

That’s a real problem—something persistent is burrowing, and under a slab it can eventually cause settling or cracks if ignored.

Let’s handle it step by step.

🕳️ What’s likely digging the tunnel

Common culprits (depending on size of the hole):

🐀 Rats

  • Small–medium holes (5–10 cm)
  • Often near structures
  • Active at night

🐇 Rabbits

  • Larger, round holes
  • Usually in soil near edges
  • Often multiple entrances

🦔 Hedgehogs (less destructive)

  • Smaller burrows
  • Usually not deep under concrete

🦡 Badgers (if in your region)

  • Large tunnels
  • Very strong diggers

🐜 or termites (less likely for big tunnels)

  • Cause damage but don’t make large visible tunnels like that

🔍 How to identify it

Check:

  • Hole size
  • Fresh soil pile shape
  • Time it appears (morning = night activity)
  • Any tracks or droppings nearby

🧱 Why this is serious

  • Soil removal = void under slab
  • Slab can sink or crack over time
  • Water can enter and worsen erosion

🛠️ What I would do (practical plan)

1. 🚫 Stop the animal first

Otherwise it will keep digging.

Options:

  • Live traps (for rats/rabbits)
  • Professional pest control (best for persistent cases)
  • Block access points around shed edges

2. 🧱 Reinforce the hole properly

Just filling soil won’t work.

Do this instead:

  • Fill with gravel or crushed stone
  • Add coarse sand
  • Compact firmly

👉 Animals hate digging through gravel

3. 🧰 Add a barrier

  • Install wire mesh (hardware cloth) around the base
  • Extend 20–30 cm underground outward

👉 Stops re-entry

4. 💧 Fix moisture issues

  • Check for water leaks or soft soil
  • Improve drainage if needed

👉 Soft ground attracts burrowing animals

⚠️ What NOT to do

  • ❌ Don’t keep refilling with loose soil (they’ll reopen it)
  • ❌ Don’t ignore it (foundation risk increases)
  • ❌ Avoid poisons unless necessary (can create smell/secondary issues)

🚨 When to call a professional

  • Tunnel keeps returning daily
  • Large or expanding void
  • You suspect rats or something bigger
  • Slab already showing cracks

💡 Simple takeaway

👉 Stop the animal first
👉 Then fill with gravel + barrier, not loose soil
👉 Protect the foundation early before damage spreads

If you want, tell me:

  • hole size
  • country/region
  • any photos

…and I can identify the exact animal and give a more targeted fix 👍
