Shepherd’s pie

Shepherd’s Pie is a classic comfort food originating from the UK. It’s made with a meat filling (traditionally lamb), topped with mashed potatoes, and baked until golden and bubbling. 🥔🍖


Ingredients (Classic Version)

  • Ground lamb (or beef for “Cottage Pie”)
  • Onions, carrots, peas (or other vegetables)
  • Garlic and herbs (thyme, rosemary)
  • Gravy or sauce (made with stock and flour)
  • Mashed potatoes for the topping
  • Optional: grated cheese to brown on top

Basic Steps

  1. Prepare the filling
    • Cook ground meat with onions, garlic, carrots, and peas.
    • Add herbs and gravy to create a thick, savory mixture.
  2. Make mashed potatoes
    • Boil and mash potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
  3. Assemble the pie
    • Layer meat mixture in a baking dish.
    • Spread mashed potatoes evenly over the top.
    • Optionally sprinkle cheese.
  4. Bake
    • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–30 minutes until the top is golden brown.

Tips

  • Use leftover roast lamb or beef to make it more flavorful.
  • Add a little butter or egg yolk to mashed potatoes for extra richness.
  • Make individual servings in ramekins for easy portioning.
