Schlegel’s Japanese gecko

Posted on April 21, 2026 by Admin

Schlegel’s Japanese gecko (scientific name Gekko japonicus) is a small, harmless house gecko native to East Asia, especially Japan, Korea, and parts of China.

🦎 What it is like

  • Size: about 8–12 cm (small and slim)
  • Color: grayish or light brown, often with faint markings
  • Eyes: large with vertical pupils (no eyelids)
  • Skin: slightly bumpy, adapted for climbing walls

🏠 Where it lives

  • Often found around houses, walls, ceilings, and lights
  • Very common in urban areas because it feeds on insects attracted to light

🍽️ What it eats

  • Mosquitoes
  • Flies
  • Moths
  • Small insects

It is actually considered beneficial because it helps control pests.

πŸŒ™ Behavior

  • Mostly nocturnal (active at night)
  • Very quick and quiet
  • Can climb smooth surfaces using sticky toe pads

😌 Is it dangerous?

No β€” it is:

  • Non-venomous
  • Harmless to humans
  • Usually avoids contact

Many people in Asia even see them as good luck or helpful house guests.

If you want, I can show how it differs from common house lizards or why they sometimes β€œclick” at night πŸ‘
