Polenta

Posted on March 10, 2026 by Admin

Polenta is a traditional dish made from coarsely ground cornmeal, widely eaten in Italian cuisine. It can be served creamy like porridge or allowed to firm up and then sliced and grilled, baked, or fried. 🌽🍽️

What Polenta Is

  • Made from ground corn (cornmeal) cooked in water or broth
  • Naturally gluten-free
  • Mild flavor that pairs well with many toppings and sauces

Basic Polenta Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Cornmeal
  • 4 cups Water or Chicken broth
  • Β½ tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • Optional: ΒΌ cup Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Bring water or broth to a boil and add salt.
  2. Slowly whisk in cornmeal to avoid lumps.
  3. Reduce heat and cook, stirring often, for 20–30 minutes until thick.
  4. Stir in butter and Parmesan for extra creaminess.

Serve warm and creamy.

Other Ways to Use Polenta

  • Grilled or fried slices after it sets
  • Base for meat sauces or stews
  • Served with mushrooms or roasted vegetables
  • Used like mashed potatoes with meats

Popular pairings include:

  • Mushrooms
  • Tomato sauce
  • Sausage

Taste and Texture

  • Flavor: mild and slightly sweet from corn
  • Texture: creamy and smooth when fresh, firm when cooled

πŸ’‘ Tip: Stirring constantly at the beginning prevents lumps and makes the polenta smoother.
