Nail with lines

Posted on April 6, 2026 by Admin

“Nails with lines” can mean a few different things depending on how the lines look. Here’s a simple way to understand it:

1. Vertical lines (up and down)

  • Very common and usually harmless
  • Often linked to aging or mild dryness
  • Think of them like “wrinkles” in the nails

2. Horizontal lines (across the nail)

  • Called Beau’s lines
  • Can appear after:
    • Illness or fever
    • Physical stress or injury
    • Nutritional deficiencies

3. White lines or streaks

  • Often from minor nail injury
  • Sometimes linked to low zinc or calcium (but not always)

4. Dark lines (brown/black)

  • Could be harmless pigmentation
  • But sometimes related to a serious condition like Melanoma
  • ⚠️ Especially important if:
    • It appears suddenly
    • Gets wider or darker
    • Only on one nail

When to check with a doctor

  • Lines suddenly appear or change quickly
  • You have other symptoms (fatigue, hair loss, etc.)
  • Dark streaks that don’t go away

If you want, you can describe the lines (color, direction, how many nails), and I can help you figure out what yours might be.
