“Nail with lines” can mean different patterns on nails, and each type can point to different causes. The two most common are vertical lines and horizontal lines.
1) Vertical lines (most common)
These are thin lines running from the base of the nail to the tip.
Usually harmless, especially if:
- They appear gradually with age
- Nails are otherwise healthy
Common causes:
- Normal aging (most common)
- Dry nails / dehydration
- Repeated minor trauma (typing, picking, etc.)
- Mild nutrient deficiencies (iron, B vitamins in some cases)
2) Horizontal lines (more important medically)
These look like grooves or dents going across the nail.
These are often called Beau’s lines.
Common causes:
- High fever or serious infection
- Major physical stress or illness
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Chemotherapy
- Severe malnutrition
- Trauma to the nail matrix
The line usually appears after the body “paused” nail growth during stress.
When to worry
You should consider a medical check if:
- Lines appear suddenly and across many nails
- Nails become very thin, brittle, or discolored
- You also have fatigue, weight loss, or other symptoms
- Horizontal lines keep recurring
If you want, describe your nail (vertical/horizontal, color changes, one nail or many), and I can narrow it down more precisely.
