Nail lines

Posted on April 15, 2026 by Admin

Nail lines can mean different things depending on their direction, color, and how many nails are affected.

🧠 Common types of nail lines

1. Vertical lines (most common)

  • Run from cuticle to tip
  • Often harmless
  • Become more visible with age or dry nails
  • Can also happen due to minor nutrient gaps or dehydration

Usually not serious.

2. Horizontal lines (Beau’s lines)

  • Deep grooves across the nail
  • Can appear after:
    • High fever
    • Major stress or illness
    • Injury to the nail matrix

These indicate a temporary pause in nail growth.

3. Dark or red vertical streaks

  • Thin black/brown/red lines under the nail
  • Can be from injury (small blood vessel damage)
  • In rare cases, may need medical check

⚠️ When to be careful

See a doctor if:

  • Lines are dark and spreading
  • Only one nail is affected and changing quickly
  • You also have pain, swelling, or bleeding

💡 Most common reality

Most nail lines are normal aging or minor trauma, not disease.

If you want, you can describe what your nail lines look like (color, direction, one nail or many), and I’ll help you identify exactly what type it is.
