The volume buttons on an iPhone control sound levels and can do several other things depending on how you use them.
Where they are
On most models of Apple iPhone, the volume up (+) and volume down (–) buttons are located on the left side of the phone, just below the ring/silent switch (or Action Button on newer models).
What the volume buttons do
1. Adjust sound
- Volume Up (+): increases sound for music, videos, calls, and alerts
- Volume Down (–): decreases sound
2. Take photos
When using the camera in the Apple Camera app:
- Press either volume button to take a photo
- Hold it to record video (depending on settings)
3. Screenshot
Press Volume Up + Side Button at the same time to capture a screenshot.
4. Emergency SOS
Pressing the Side Button + Volume button and holding them activates Emergency SOS.
5. Force restart (most newer iPhones)
- Press Volume Up
- Press Volume Down
- Hold the Side Button until the Apple logo appears.
If your volume buttons aren’t working
Try these quick fixes:
- Restart the phone
- Remove the case (it may block the buttons)
- Check Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Change with Buttons
- Clean around the buttons if dirt is stuck.
If they still don’t respond, it could be a hardware issue that may need repair.
