I soaked my berries in salt water and saw these white wiggling things come out. Should I just throw them away?

Posted on April 21, 2026 by Admin

What you saw is very likely small insect larvae (worms/maggots) that sometimes live in berries like strawberries or raspberries. Soaking in salt water can make them come out, which is why you noticed the white “wiggling” movement.

This can happen with produce like:

  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Blueberries (less common)
  • Blackberries

These insects are usually harmless if accidentally eaten, but understandably unpleasant.

Should you throw the berries away?

✔️ Safe option (recommended if you’re uncomfortable)

Yes—throw them away if:

  • You saw multiple larvae
  • The berries look soft, damaged, or moldy
  • You feel uneasy about eating them

✔️ If berries are still firm and mostly clean

You can still use them if:

  • Only a few insects came out
  • No mold or bad smell is present

But you must clean them thoroughly:

  1. Rinse under running water
  2. Soak in salt water or vinegar water (10–15 minutes)
  3. Rinse again well
  4. Dry before storing

Important reality check

  • This is not dangerous in most cases
  • It’s a common produce issue, especially with organic or fresh berries
  • It does not mean the fruit was “poisonous” or unsafe in a toxic sense

Bottom line

  • If you’re grossed out or saw many larvae → discard them
  • If they look mostly fine → they can be cleaned and eaten safely

If you want, tell me what type of berries they were and how many worms you saw—I can tell you how likely it is to happen again and how to prevent it next time.
