Hibiscus tea

Posted on February 27, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a simple guide to making refreshing hibiscus tea, along with a few tasty variations: 🌺

Ingredients (makes 4 cups / 1 liter)

  • ¼ cup dried hibiscus petals (or 4–5 hibiscus tea bags)
  • 4 cups water
  • 2–3 tbsp sugar, honey, or agave (adjust to taste)
  • Optional flavorings:
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 2–3 slices fresh ginger
    • 1–2 cloves
    • Citrus slices (orange, lemon, or lime)

Instructions

  1. Boil water:
    • Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan.
  2. Steep hibiscus:
    • Remove from heat and add dried hibiscus petals (and optional spices like cinnamon or ginger).
    • Cover and let steep for 10–15 minutes for a strong, tart flavor.
  3. Sweeten:
    • Strain the tea into a pitcher.
    • Stir in sugar, honey, or agave while the tea is still warm so it dissolves completely.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve hot, or chill in the refrigerator and serve over ice for a refreshing iced hibiscus tea.
    • Add citrus slices for a fruity twist.

Tips & Variations

  • Iced hibiscus tea: Double the hibiscus and steep 15 minutes for a deep color and flavor. Chill and serve over ice.
  • Hibiscus lemonade: Mix equal parts chilled hibiscus tea and fresh lemon juice, sweeten to taste.
  • Spiced hibiscus tea: Add star anise, cloves, or a slice of ginger during steeping for a warming, aromatic drink.

If you want, I can also give a caribbean-style hibiscus tea recipe (Agua de Jamaica) that’s sweet, tart, and perfectly balanced with sugar and lime—very popular in Mexico and the Caribbean.
