French Onion Meatloaf

Here’s a delicious twist on classic meatloaf: French Onion Meatloaf 🍞🧅🧄—inspired by the rich flavors of French onion soup.


Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Meatloaf

  • 1 ½ lbs Ground Beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
  • 1 cup French Fried Onions (reserve some for topping)
  • 1 cup Bread Crumbs
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 Egg
  • ½ cup Milk
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • ½ tsp Black Pepper

Topping / Glaze

  • 1 cup Beef Broth
  • ½ cup Shredded Gruyère Cheese (or Swiss)
  • ½ cup reserved French Fried Onions

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven

  • Preheat to 350°F (175°C).
  • Lightly grease a loaf pan.

2. Prepare Meatloaf

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, French fried onions, bread crumbs, garlic, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  2. Combine until just mixed; avoid overworking to keep meatloaf tender.
  3. Shape into a loaf and place in prepared pan.

3. Bake Partially

  • Bake 30–35 minutes to start cooking the meatloaf.

4. Add Topping

  1. Pour beef broth over the meatloaf.
  2. Sprinkle Gruyère cheese and remaining French fried onions on top.

5. Continue Baking

  • Bake another 15–20 minutes, until meatloaf is cooked through (internal temp ~160°F / 71°C) and cheese is melted and golden.

6. Serve

  • Let meatloaf rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables.

✅ Tips

  • For deeper French onion flavor, sauté 1 onion until caramelized and add to the meat mixture.
  • Gruyère can be swapped for Swiss or mozzarella for a milder taste.
  • Leftovers reheat well and make great sandwiches.
