🍞 Buttery Yeast Rolls

Ingredients (makes 12 rolls)

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • Extra melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast
    • In a small bowl, mix warm water, a pinch of sugar, and yeast.
    • Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the dough
    • In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
    • Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, melted butter, and egg.
    • Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead
    • Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
  4. First rise
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the rolls
    • Punch down the dough.
    • Divide into 12 equal pieces and shape into balls.
    • Place in a greased baking pan, spaced slightly apart.
  6. Second rise
    • Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  7. Bake
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Bake rolls for 15–18 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Brush with butter
    • Brush warm rolls with melted butter before serving.

💡 Tips

  • For extra softness, add 1 tablespoon of milk powder to the flour.
  • Serve fresh or warm with butter, honey, or jam.
  • Rolls freeze well—just reheat in a warm oven before serving.
