Amish Chicken and Green Beans

Posted on April 1, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a simple and hearty recipe for Amish Chicken and Green Beans, a comforting dish inspired by traditional Amish home cooking. It’s flavorful, easy to prepare, and perfect for family meals.

Ingredients

  • 4 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs (or breasts if preferred)
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme)
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Chicken

  1. Pat chicken dry and season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  2. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Brown the chicken on both sides until golden (about 4–5 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.

2. Cook the Vegetables

  1. In the same skillet, sauté onions until soft and translucent.
  2. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add green beans and stir for 2–3 minutes.

3. Simmer Together

  1. Pour in chicken broth and sprinkle in thyme.
  2. Return chicken to the skillet, nestling it among the beans.
  3. Cover and simmer on low heat for 25–30 minutes, until chicken is fully cooked (internal temp 165°F / 74°C) and green beans are tender.

4. Optional Thickening

  • If you want a thicker sauce, remove chicken and beans, stir 1 tablespoon flour into the liquid, and cook for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened, then return chicken and beans.

5. Serve

  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread for a complete Amish-style meal.

💡 Tips for Extra Flavor:

  • Add a splash of cream at the end for a richer sauce.
  • Use smoked paprika for a subtle smoky depth.
  • For a one-pan meal, roast the chicken and green beans together in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35–40 minutes after browning.

If you want, I can also give you a slow-cooker version of Amish Chicken and Green Beans that’s even easier and tenderizes the chicken perfectly.

Do you want me to make that version?
