Air-fried potato cakes

Posted on March 15, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a complete guide to Air-Fried Potato Cakes — crispy, golden, and much healthier than traditional frying:

Air-Fried Potato Cakes Overview

Potato cakes are small patties made from mashed or grated potatoes mixed with seasonings and lightly fried until crisp. Using an air fryer gives the same golden crunch with far less oil.

  • Texture: Crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside
  • Flavor: Savory, lightly seasoned, with a comforting potato flavor
  • Uses: Side dish, snack, or breakfast item

Ingredients (makes ~8 cakes)

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (or grated and drained)
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese (optional, cheddar works well)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion or scallions
  • 1 egg, beaten (to bind)
  • 2–3 tbsp flour (or breadcrumbs)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: garlic powder, paprika, or herbs
  • Cooking spray or 1 tsp oil for brushing

Instructions

1. Prepare the Potato Mixture

  • In a bowl, combine mashed/grated potatoes, cheese, onion, egg, flour, salt, pepper, and any optional spices.
  • Mix until the mixture holds together. If too wet, add a bit more flour or breadcrumbs.

2. Shape the Cakes

  • Take small portions (~1/4 cup) and form into flat patties, about 2–3 inches in diameter.

3. Preheat Air Fryer

  • Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes.

4. Cook the Potato Cakes

  • Lightly spray or brush the air fryer basket and the cakes with oil.
  • Place patties in the basket in a single layer (don’t overcrowd).
  • Air-fry 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden brown and crispy.

5. Serve

  • Serve hot with sour cream, ketchup, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Tips for Perfect Air-Fried Potato Cakes

  • Use chilled mashed potatoes for easier shaping.
  • Grated potatoes: Squeeze out excess moisture to prevent soggy cakes.
  • Crispier cakes: Lightly brush or spray with oil before air frying.
  • Variations: Add cooked bacon bits, herbs, or chopped veggies for flavor twists.

💡 Serving Ideas:

  • As a side for breakfast with eggs
  • With a salad for lunch or dinner
  • As a snack with a spicy dipping sauce

If you want, I can also make a super quick 15-minute version using leftover mashed potatoes that’s extra crispy in the air fryer.

Do you want me to do that?
