Clathrus archeri

Posted on March 6, 2026 by Admin

🧫 Clathrus archeri (Devil’s Fingers / Octopus Stinkhorn)

Clathrus archeri is a striking and unusual fungus commonly called Devil’s Fingers or Octopus Stinkhorn because of its bright red, tentacle-like arms that spread outward when it matures.

🌍 Origin & Distribution

  • Native to Australia and New Zealand
  • Later spread to Europe, Asia, and North America
  • Often found in forests, gardens, and wood-chip mulch

🍄 Appearance

This fungus has a very unusual life cycle:

  1. Egg stage – Starts as a small whitish “egg” partially buried in soil.
  2. Emerging stage – The egg splits open.
  3. Mature stage – 4–8 red arms unfold, resembling bloody fingers or an octopus.

Features:

  • Color: Bright red or pink arms
  • Surface: Slimy dark coating containing spores
  • Smell: Strong rotting flesh odor

🪰 Why It Smells Bad

The smell attracts flies and insects.
These insects land on the slimy spore layer and spread the spores, helping the fungus reproduce.

This strategy is typical of fungi in the genus Clathrus and the stinkhorn family Phallaceae.

⚠️ Is It Edible?

  • Generally considered inedible
  • The smell and slimy texture make it unpleasant
  • Some sources say the egg stage may be edible, but it is usually not recommended to eat

🔎 Interesting Facts

  • It can look like alien tentacles emerging from the ground.
  • Because of its appearance and smell, it is one of the most bizarre fungi in the world.
  • The species name “archeri” honors the mycologist William Archer.

✅ In simple terms:
Clathrus archeri is a strange, foul-smelling fungus with red tentacle-like arms that use smell to attract flies and spread spores.
