Chicken and Dumplings

🍲 Chicken and Dumplings

Chicken and dumplings is a classic comfort dish made with tender chicken in a rich broth and soft, fluffy dumplings cooked right in the pot. It’s especially popular in the Southern United States.


🥘 Ingredients

For the soup:

  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 2 carrots (sliced)
  • 2 celery stalks (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt, pepper, thyme (to taste)

For the dumplings:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp butter (melted)
  • ½ cup milk

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Sauté vegetables:
    In a large pot, melt butter and cook onion, carrots, and celery until soft.
  2. Add broth & chicken:
    Pour in broth, add shredded chicken, and simmer 10 minutes. Stir in milk or cream.
  3. Make dumpling dough:
    Mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in melted butter and milk until just combined.
  4. Cook dumplings:
    Drop spoonfuls of dough into simmering soup. Cover and cook 12–15 minutes (do not lift lid while cooking).
  5. Season & serve:
    Adjust salt and pepper. Serve hot.

💡 Tips

  • For richer flavor, use rotisserie chicken.
  • For thicker broth, mix 1 tbsp cornstarch with water and stir in before adding dumplings.
  • Add peas for extra color and texture.
