Scallion

Posted on March 1, 2026 by Admin

🌿 Scallion (Green Onion)

A scallion, also called a green onion, is a young onion harvested before the bulb fully develops. It has a mild, fresh onion flavor and is used both raw and cooked.

🥗 What It Tastes Like

  • Mild onion flavor
  • Slightly sweet
  • Less sharp than regular onions

Both the white part (stronger flavor) and the green tops (milder, fresher taste) are edible.

🔪 How to Use Scallions

✅ Raw

  • Sprinkle over salads
  • Add to tacos or baked potatoes
  • Mix into dips, cream cheese, or yogurt sauces

✅ Cooked

  • Stir-fries
  • Fried rice
  • Omelets or scrambled eggs
  • Soups (added at the end for freshness)

🍳 Quick Garlic-Butter Scallions

  1. Heat butter in a pan.
  2. Add chopped scallions.
  3. Sauté 1–2 minutes with a pinch of salt.
  4. Finish with black pepper and a squeeze of lemon.

Great on steak, chicken, or mashed potatoes.

🧊 Storage Tip

  • Wrap in a slightly damp paper towel.
  • Store in the fridge in a plastic bag.
  • Or stand them in a glass with a little water (like flowers).

If you’d like, I can also show you how to make a simple scallion sauce that works on rice, noodles, or grilled meat.
