Salisbury steak

Salisbury steak is a classic comfort dish made from seasoned ground beef patties simmered in rich brown gravy, often served with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.


Ingredients

For the Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Gravy

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced (optional but recommended)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Patties

  • In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Form into 3–4 oval patties.

2. Brown the Steaks

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
  • Remove from pan and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).

3. Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, add butter, onions, and mushrooms.
  • Cook until softened (about 5 minutes).
  • Sprinkle flour over vegetables and stir for 1 minute.
  • Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Simmer until thickened.

4. Simmer Together

  • Return patties to the skillet.
  • Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until cooked through and tender.

Serving Suggestions

Serve over:

  • Creamy mashed potatoes
  • Buttered egg noodles
  • Rice

Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.


Tips for Extra Flavor

  • Add a splash of Dijon mustard to the gravy.
  • Mix a little grated parmesan into the beef mixture.
  • For a richer sauce, stir in a tablespoon of sour cream at the end.
