Hamburger Steak with Gravy
Ingredients:
For the hamburger steaks:
-
1 lb (450g) ground beef (80% lean)
-
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
-
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
-
1/4 cup milk
-
1 large egg
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste
-
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
For the gravy:
-
2 tablespoons butter
-
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
-
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions:
-
Make the hamburger steaks:
-
In a bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until combined but don’t overwork.
-
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.
-
-
Cook the patties:
-
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
-
Add the patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove patties from skillet and set aside, keeping warm.
-
-
Make the gravy:
-
In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until soft and translucent (about 3–4 minutes).
-
Stir in flour and cook, stirring constantly, for about 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
-
Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
-
Add Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Let the gravy simmer and thicken, about 4–5 minutes.
-
-
Combine and serve:
-
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon some gravy over them, and simmer together for 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors.
-
Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles, and steamed veggies.
