This version features tender spiced apples baked under a thick, buttery oat crumble topping—perfect for serving with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Deep Dish Apple Crisp

Ingredients (Serves 6 to 8)

For the apple filling:

  • 6 to 8 large apples (about 1.5 kg), peeled, cored, and sliced

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the crisp topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (cold and cut into cubes)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Grease a deep 9×13 inch baking dish or similar deep casserole dish.

Step 2: Prepare the apple filling

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine sliced apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.

  2. Toss everything until the apples are evenly coated.

  3. Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish and spread out evenly.

Step 3: Make the topping

  1. In another mixing bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

  2. Add the cold butter cubes.

  3. Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized bits of butter.

  4. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Place the dish in the preheated oven.

  2. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.

  3. If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil for the last 10 to 15 minutes of baking.

Step 5: Cool and serve

  1. Remove the crisp from the oven and let it cool for 15 to 20 minutes before serving.

  2. Serve warm on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Storage

  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

  • Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.

  • Can be frozen before or after baking (wrap tightly and freeze for up to 2 months).
