Deep Dish Apple Crisp
Ingredients (Serves 6 to 8)
For the apple filling:
-
6 to 8 large apples (about 1.5 kg), peeled, cored, and sliced
-
½ cup granulated sugar
-
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
-
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
-
1 tablespoon lemon juice
-
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the crisp topping:
-
1 cup all-purpose flour
-
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
-
1 cup brown sugar, packed
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
1 teaspoon cinnamon
-
½ cup unsalted butter (cold and cut into cubes)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the oven
-
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
-
Grease a deep 9×13 inch baking dish or similar deep casserole dish.
Step 2: Prepare the apple filling
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine sliced apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
-
Toss everything until the apples are evenly coated.
-
Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish and spread out evenly.
Step 3: Make the topping
-
In another mixing bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
-
Add the cold butter cubes.
-
Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized bits of butter.
-
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
Step 4: Bake
-
Place the dish in the preheated oven.
-
Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
-
If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil for the last 10 to 15 minutes of baking.
Step 5: Cool and serve
-
Remove the crisp from the oven and let it cool for 15 to 20 minutes before serving.
-
Serve warm on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Storage
-
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
-
Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
-
Can be frozen before or after baking (wrap tightly and freeze for up to 2 months).
