๐Ÿชฑ Ascaris lumbricoides

Ascaris lumbricoides is a large parasitic roundworm that infects the intestines of humans. It is one of the most common human intestinal parasites worldwide, especially in areas with poor sanitation.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Classification

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Nematoda
  • Class: Chromadorea
  • Order: Ascaridida
  • Family: Ascarididae
  • Genus: Ascaris
  • Species: A. lumbricoides

๐Ÿงฌ Description

  • Appearance: Cylindrical, smooth, and pinkish-white
  • Size: Females 20โ€“35 cm long; males 15โ€“30 cm long
  • Life cycle: Eggs are ingested, hatch in the intestine, larvae migrate through the lungs, then return to the intestine to mature.

โš ๏ธ Transmission

  • Spread via the fecal-oral route, usually from contaminated food, water, or soil.
  • Poor sanitation and hygiene increase the risk of infection.

๐Ÿฉบ Symptoms of Infection (Ascariasis)

  • Often asymptomatic in mild cases
  • Abdominal discomfort, bloating, or nausea
  • Intestinal obstruction in severe infections
  • Cough or respiratory symptoms during larval lung migration
  • Malnutrition or growth delays in children

๐Ÿงน Diagnosis

  • Detection of eggs in stool samples under a microscope
  • Rarely, adult worms may be expelled in stool or vomit

๐Ÿ’Š Treatment

  • Anthelmintic medications such as:
    • Albendazole
    • Mebendazole
    • Ivermectin (in some cases)
  • Good hygiene and sanitation are critical to prevent reinfection

๐Ÿง  Prevention

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap before eating
  • Properly wash and cook fruits and vegetables
  • Use clean water and improve sanitation
  • Regular deworming programs in endemic areas

If you want, I can make a diagram showing the life cycle of Ascaris lumbricoides from egg ingestion to adult worm to make it easier to visualize.

Do you want me to make that diagram?
