🥧 Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s Pie is a classic comfort dish from the United Kingdom and Ireland. It’s made with a savory minced meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden.


🥘 Key Ingredients

For the meat filling

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb (traditional)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, pepper, and thyme

For the mashed potato topping

  • 3–4 potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper
  • Optional: grated cheese

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Cook the potatoes
Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (about 15 minutes). Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.

2. Prepare the filling
In a skillet, sautĂŠ onion and garlic until soft. Add ground lamb and cook until browned.

3. Add flavor
Stir in vegetables, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, and thyme. Simmer until slightly thickened.

4. Assemble
Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes and smooth evenly with a fork.

5. Bake
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes until the top is golden.


🌟 Important Note

  • Shepherd’s Pie traditionally uses lamb.
  • When beef is used instead, it’s technically called Cottage Pie.

🍽️ Serving Tips

  • Let the pie rest 10 minutes before serving so it holds its shape.
  • Serve with green salad or steamed vegetables.
