🍏 Chicago-Style Bakery Apple Slices

This dessert is famous in many bakeries in Chicago. It’s a large tray bake with a thick buttery crust, lots of cinnamon-spiced apples, and a sweet glaze on top—cut into big square slices.

🧾 Ingredients

Crust & Topping

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp salt

Apple Filling

  • 4–5 apples (peeled and sliced)
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Glaze (Optional)

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Dough

  1. Mix flour, sugar, butter, egg, and salt until a soft dough forms.
  2. Divide dough into two portions.

2️⃣ Make the Base

  • Press one portion of dough into a greased baking pan.

3️⃣ Prepare Apple Filling

  • Mix sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch.

4️⃣ Assemble

  • Spread the apple mixture over the base.
  • Crumble or roll the remaining dough on top.

5️⃣ Bake

  • Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 35–40 minutes until golden.

6️⃣ Add Glaze

  • Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.
  • Drizzle over the cooled apple slices.

🍽️ Serving

  • Cut into square bakery-style slices.
  • Serve with tea, coffee, or vanilla ice cream.

💡 Tips
