Shepherd’s pie

🥧 Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s pie is a comforting baked dish made with minced meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes.

🧾 Ingredients

Meat Filling

  • 500 g minced lamb (traditional) or beef
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 carrot (diced)
  • ½ cup peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • 2 tbsp oil

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 3–4 potatoes (peeled and chopped)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Salt to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until soft (15–20 minutes).
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, and salt until creamy.

2️⃣ Cook the Filling

  1. Heat oil in a pan.
  2. Cook onion and garlic until soft.
  3. Add minced meat and cook until browned.
  4. Add carrot, peas, tomato paste, broth, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  5. Simmer for 10 minutes until slightly thick.

3️⃣ Assemble

  • Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
  • Cover evenly with mashed potatoes.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 20–25 minutes until the top is slightly golden.

🍽️ Tips

  • Sprinkle cheese on top for extra flavor.
  • Use a fork to make lines on the mashed potatoes so they crisp nicely.

📌 Note

If the dish is made with beef instead of lamb, it’s often called cottage pie.
