Phalaenopsis gigantea

Posted on March 11, 2026 by Admin

Phalaenopsis gigantea is a striking and rare species of moth orchid native to Borneo. It is famous among orchid enthusiasts for its giant leaves, impressive flowers, and long-lasting blooms. 🌿🌸

Key Features

  • Leaves: Extremely large, thick, and leathery; can grow over 3 feet (90 cm) long in mature plants.
  • Flowers: White or cream with brown or maroon spotting; blooms are long-lasting (several weeks).
  • Growth Habit: Epiphytic (grows on trees in its natural habitat), prefers high humidity and good air circulation.

Care Tips

  1. Light: Bright, indirect sunlight; avoid direct midday sun.
  2. Temperature: Warm conditions, ideally 70–85°F (21–29°C) during the day and 60–70°F (15–21°C) at night.
  3. Humidity: 60–80% is ideal; mist leaves occasionally or use a humidity tray.
  4. Watering: Keep roots lightly moist; avoid letting water sit in the crown of the plant.
  5. Potting Medium: Use bark, sphagnum moss, or a mix designed for epiphytic orchids.
  6. Fertilizer: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during growth; reduce in winter.

Special Notes

  • Slow Grower: Takes several years to reach full size and flower.
  • Propagation: Usually through keikis (baby plants that grow on the stem) or seed propagation by specialists.
  • Collector’s Plant: Highly prized due to its size, rarity, and unique appearance.

I can also make a care schedule for Phalaenopsis gigantea, showing when to water, fertilize, and repot to keep it healthy and blooming.

Do you want me to make that schedule?
