Shepherd’s pie

Shepherd’s Pie is a classic British comfort dish made with minced lamb cooked in gravy and vegetables, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden. It’s warm, hearty, and perfect for a filling meal. 🥔🥩

Simple Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Ingredients

  • 500 g minced lamb
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2 carrots (diced)
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup broth (beef or lamb)
  • 4 large potatoes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Optional: garlic, thyme, or rosemary 🌿

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mashed potatoes
    • Boil peeled potatoes until soft.
    • Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until creamy.
  2. Cook the filling
    • In a pan, cook onion until soft.
    • Add minced lamb and brown it.
    • Add carrots, tomato paste, broth, and seasoning.
    • Simmer for about 10 minutes.
    • Stir in peas.
  3. Assemble
    • Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
    • Cover with mashed potatoes.
  4. Bake
    • Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20–25 minutes until the top turns golden.

Tip ⭐

For extra flavor, sprinkle cheese on the mashed potato before baking.

Interesting Note

If the same dish is made with beef instead of lamb, it’s usually called Cottage Pie.
