Schlumbergera truncata

Posted on March 10, 2026 by Admin

Schlumbergera truncata is a species of cactus native to the coastal mountains of southeastern Brazil. It is widely known as the Christmas cactus due to its tendency to bloom in late November to December in the Northern Hemisphere.

Key Features:

  • Growth habit: Segmented, flattened stem “pads” with slightly toothed edges. Unlike desert cacti, it is epiphytic and grows on trees or rocks in humid forests.
  • Flowers: Tubular, bright pink to red flowers that bloom at the end of the stem segments. The blooms are showy and often fragrant.
  • Leaves: Technically, the flattened stem segments function as leaves. True leaves are tiny and transient.
  • Care:
    • Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct harsh sun.
    • Watering: Keep moderately moist during growing season; reduce water in winter.
    • Temperature: Prefers 60–70°F (15–21°C) and humidity similar to its native tropical forest habitat.
    • Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic soil; a mix for epiphytic cacti or orchids works well.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callus before planting.

This plant is popular as a houseplant due to its festive flowers, relatively easy care, and unique, segmented foliage.

If you want, I can also give a step-by-step guide to make it bloom indoors — it has some specific light and temperature triggers. Do you want me to do that?
