Cabbage with rice

Here’s a simple and tasty way to make cabbage with rice, a classic comfort-food dish:


Ingredients (Serves 4):

  • 1 small cabbage, chopped
  • 1 cup rice (white or brown)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth (or water)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: smoked paprika, caraway seeds, or cooked bacon for extra flavor

Instructions:

  1. Cook the rice:
    • Rinse 1 cup of rice.
    • In a pot, bring 2 cups of broth or water to a boil.
    • Add rice, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until cooked (15–20 min for white rice, 40–45 min for brown).
  2. Prepare cabbage:
    • While rice cooks, heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Sauté onions until translucent, then add garlic and cook 1 minute.
    • Add chopped cabbage, salt, pepper, and optional spices.
    • Cook, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is soft and slightly caramelized (8–10 minutes).
  3. Combine rice and cabbage:
    • Add cooked rice to the cabbage skillet and mix well.
    • Adjust seasoning if needed.
  4. Serve:
    • Hot as a main dish or side.
    • Optional: garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or dill.

Tips:

  • For a heartier version, add cooked sausage, chicken, or bacon.
  • Squeeze a little lemon juice over the finished dish for brightness.
  • Leftovers taste great reheated with a splash of broth or a fried egg on top.
