🥔 Classic Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold)
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup (120 ml) milk or cream, warmed
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: garlic, sour cream, or cream cheese for extra flavor

Instructions

  1. Prepare the potatoes:
    • Peel (optional) and cut potatoes into evenly sized chunks.
  2. Boil:
    • Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold, salted water.
    • Bring to a boil, then simmer 15–20 minutes until tender when pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain & Mash:
    • Drain potatoes thoroughly and return them to the pot.
    • Mash using a potato masher, ricer, or fork.
  4. Add Butter & Milk:
    • Stir in butter until melted.
    • Gradually add warm milk or cream until desired creaminess is reached.
  5. Season & Serve:
    • Add salt and pepper to taste.
    • Optional: fold in garlic, sour cream, or cream cheese for extra flavor.

  • Use warm milk to keep the potatoes creamy.
  • Avoid over-mashing to prevent gluey texture.
  • Yukon Gold potatoes are naturally buttery and make rich, smooth mash.
