Shepherd’s pie

Here’s a classic guide for making Shepherd’s Pie 🥧 — a comforting dish of savory meat topped with creamy mashed potatoes.


🥘 Shepherd’s Pie (Serves 4–6)

Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb (traditional) or ground beef (then technically a “Cottage Pie”)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Topping:

  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared with butter, milk, salt, and pepper)
  • Optional: shredded cheese for a golden topping

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

2️⃣ Prepare the Filling

  1. In a skillet, cook ground lamb or beef over medium heat until browned.
  2. Add onions, garlic, and carrots; cook 5–7 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour in broth and simmer 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  5. Add peas or other vegetables and remove from heat.

3️⃣ Assemble the Pie

  1. Spread the meat and vegetable mixture evenly in a baking dish.
  2. Spoon mashed potatoes on top and smooth with a spatula or fork.
  3. Optional: sprinkle shredded cheese for extra flavor.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Bake 20–25 minutes, until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Let sit 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm.

  • Vegetarian version: Replace meat with lentils or mushrooms.
  • Creamier potatoes: Mix in sour cream or cream cheese.
  • Flavor boost: Add a splash of red wine to the filling while simmering.
  • Make ahead: Assemble in advance and refrigerate; bake just before serving.

💡 Fun fact: Shepherd’s Pie originates from the UK and traditionally uses lamb because shepherds tended sheep. Using beef makes it a “Cottage Pie,” but the concept is the same — hearty meat and veggie base topped with mashed potatoes.
