Cleaning dirty bed pillows

Posted on April 22, 2026 by Admin

Cleaning dirty bed pillows is worth doing regularly—pillowcases don’t stop sweat, oils, and dust mites from building up inside.

🛏️ Step 1: Check the pillow type

Different fillings need different care:

  • Cotton / polyester (most common) → usually machine washable
  • Down or feather → washable, but needs gentle handling
  • Memory foam / latex → do not machine wash (can break apart)

🧼 Step 2: Washing (for washable pillows)

Machine wash:

  • Use warm water
  • Mild detergent
  • Wash 2 pillows at once to balance the machine
  • Add an extra rinse cycle to remove soap residue

For heavy odor or yellowing:

  • Add a little baking soda
  • A small amount of white vinegar in rinse cycle helps remove smells

🧽 Step 3: For memory foam (no washing machine)

  • Remove cover and wash it separately
  • Spot clean with a damp cloth + mild soap
  • Lightly sprinkle baking soda, leave for a few hours, then vacuum
  • Let it air dry completely

🌞 Step 4: Drying (very important)

  • Tumble dry on low heat
  • Add clean tennis balls or dryer balls → keeps pillows fluffy
  • Make sure they are completely dry (prevents mold)

🧠 How often?

  • Wash pillows every 3–6 months
  • Replace pillows every 1–2 years (depending on condition)

⚠️ Signs your pillow needs cleaning or replacing

  • Yellow stains
  • Bad smell
  • Lumps or flat shape
  • Allergy symptoms getting worse

If you want, I can show you a deep-clean method to make old yellow pillows look almost new again.
