Stuffed cabbage rolls

Stuffed cabbage rolls are a traditional comfort dish made by wrapping cabbage leaves around a savory filling, then cooking them in a sauce until tender.

What they are

Cabbage leaves are softened, filled with a mixture like:

  • Ground meat (beef, lamb, or chicken)
  • Rice or grains
  • Onion, garlic, herbs, and spices

Then they’re rolled up and simmered in a sauce (often tomato-based).


Basic recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 large cabbage
  • 500g minced meat (optional if you want vegetarian version)

  • Garlic, salt, pepper, spices
  • Tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • Oil or butter

Steps:

  1. Soften cabbage leaves
    Boil the whole cabbage or freeze it, then peel off leaves carefully.
  2. Make filling
    Mix meat, rice, onion, garlic, and spices.
  3. Roll
    Place filling in each leaf and roll tightly like a wrap.
  4. Cook
    Arrange rolls in a pot, cover with tomato sauce and a little water.
  5. Simmer
    Cook on low heat for 40–60 minutes until tender.

Flavor tips

  • Add lemon juice or yogurt for a tangy taste
  • Use paprika, cumin, or black pepper for depth
  • Let them rest after cooking for better flavor

Variations

  • Vegetarian: use lentils, mushrooms, or mixed vegetables
  • Middle Eastern style: spiced with cinnamon and allspice
  • Eastern European style: heavier tomato or sour cream sauces
