Pometia pinnata

Pometia pinnata is a tropical rainforest tree from the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), widely found in Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands.

🌳 What it is

  • Common name: Matoa / Taun tree / Fijian longan (in some regions)
  • Grows in: Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Pacific islands
  • Tall forest tree, can reach large heights (20–40+ meters)

🍈 Fruit

  • Small, round to oval fruit clusters
  • Skin: reddish-brown or purple when ripe
  • Flesh: translucent, juicy, sweet-sour (similar to lychee or longan)
  • Seed: large relative to fruit size

Nutritional value

  • Contains vitamin C, antioxidants, and natural sugars
  • Provides quick energy but should be eaten in moderation due to sugar content
