Spathiphyllum wallisii

Posted on April 20, 2026 by Admin

Spathiphyllum wallisii, commonly known as the peace lily, is a popular indoor ornamental plant loved for its glossy green leaves and elegant white “flower” spathes.

🌿 Basic Description

  • Type: Tropical evergreen perennial
  • Family: Araceae
  • Native region: Rainforests of Central and South America
  • Size: Usually 30–60 cm indoors (can grow larger in ideal conditions)

The white part people call a “flower” is actually a modified leaf (spathe) surrounding a small flower spike.

🌸 Why people love it

  • Produces beautiful white blooms indoors
  • Very good at tolerating low light
  • Known for air-purifying qualities (helps remove some indoor toxins)
  • Relatively low maintenance

💧 Care needs

🌤 Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light
  • Can survive in low light but may flower less

💦 Water

  • Keep soil slightly moist
  • Wilts dramatically when thirsty, but usually recovers after watering

🌡 Temperature

  • Best between 18–27°C
  • Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes

🌱 Soil

  • Well-draining potting mix (rich in organic matter)

⚠️ Common problems

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage
  • No flowers: Not enough light
  • Brown tips: Low humidity or fluoride in water
  • Drooping leaves: Usually underwatering (or sometimes overwatering)

☠️ Important note

Peace lily is toxic to pets (cats and dogs) if chewed, due to calcium oxalate crystals.

🌼 Extra interesting fact

It’s often given as a gift because it symbolizes peace, sympathy, and healing, especially at memorials or hospitals.
