AMLODIPINE SIDE EFFECTS

Posted on April 19, 2026 by Admin

Amlodipine is a commonly used blood pressure medicine (a calcium channel blocker). It’s generally well tolerated, but like all medicines, it can have side effects.

🧠 Common side effects (most people tolerate these)

These are usually mild and may improve over time:

  • Swollen ankles or feet (very common)
  • Headache
  • Flushing (feeling warm in face/skin)
  • Dizziness, especially when starting
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • Mild heart palpitations

⚠️ Less common side effects

  • Nausea or stomach discomfort
  • Sleepiness
  • Gum swelling (rare but known effect)
  • Low blood pressure (especially if dose is high or combined with other BP drugs)

🚨 Rare but serious side effects (need medical attention)

  • Severe swelling or rapid weight gain (fluid buildup)
  • Chest pain or worsening heart symptoms
  • Fainting or very low blood pressure
  • Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty)

🧠 Important context

  • Many side effects are dose-related
  • Swollen ankles are the most common reason people notice it
  • Doctors often adjust dose or combine with other BP medicines if needed
  • Stopping suddenly without advice is usually not recommended

🧭 Bottom line

Amlodipine is generally safe and widely used, but ankle swelling, headache, and flushing are the most common side effects.
