Lines on nails

Posted on April 18, 2026 by Admin

Lines on nails are usually harmless, but they can sometimes give clues about your health depending on the pattern.

Your nails are made of keratin (like hair), and changes can appear due to aging, minor injuries, or health conditions such as Nail disorder.

đź’… Types of lines on nails

1. Vertical lines (most common)

  • Run from cuticle to tip
  • Usually normal with aging
  • Can also come from dryness or minor trauma

2. Horizontal lines (Beau’s lines)

  • Run across the nail
  • Can appear after illness, high fever, stress, or injury
  • Grow out slowly with the nail

🧠 Possible causes

  • Aging (very common)
  • Nutritional gaps (iron, zinc, protein)
  • Stress or recent illness
  • Skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis
  • Repeated nail trauma (typing, biting, cleaning chemicals)

⚠️ When to be careful

See a doctor if you notice:

  • Sudden deep horizontal grooves
  • Nails changing color (dark, blue, yellow, or thickened)
  • Pain or swelling around nails
  • Multiple nails changing at once

đźš« Important reality check

  • Nail lines are not a definite sign of a specific disease
  • Viral posts often exaggerate them as “hidden illness signals”
  • Most cases are harmless or temporary

🧠 Bottom line

Most nail lines are normal or minor changes in the body, especially with age. Only unusual, sudden, or widespread changes need medical attention.

If you want, you can describe your nail lines (or send a picture), and I can help you understand what type they likely are.
