Cabbage is very good for your health, but these four types of people should not consume it.

Posted on April 16, 2026 by Admin

That claim is a bit exaggerated. Cabbage is generally safe and healthy for most people, but there are a few situations where some people should limit or be careful with it—not completely “avoid it forever.”

Cabbage

🥬 Who should be careful with cabbage?

1. People with thyroid problems (especially hypothyroidism)

Cabbage contains goitrogens, which in very large amounts may interfere with iodine use in the thyroid.

  • Risk is mainly with raw, excessive intake
  • Cooking reduces this effect a lot

👉 If you have thyroid disease, you don’t need to avoid it completely—just don’t overeat raw cabbage daily.

2. People with IBS or sensitive digestion

  • Cabbage is high in fiber and fermentable carbs
  • Can cause:
    • gas
    • bloating
    • stomach discomfort

👉 Especially in people with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

3. People with kidney issues (in some cases)

  • Cabbage contains potassium
  • Usually not a problem for healthy people
  • But in advanced kidney disease, potassium intake may need control

4. People prone to gas and bloating

  • Cabbage is a gas-producing vegetable
  • Can worsen:
    • acidity discomfort
    • bloating
    • flatulence

🧠 Important reality check

  • There is no group that must completely avoid cabbage in all cases
  • The issue is usually quantity + individual tolerance + preparation method (raw vs cooked)

✅ How to make cabbage easier to digest

  • Cook it (boil, steam, stir-fry) instead of eating raw
  • Eat small portions first
  • Combine with spices like cumin or ginger

🟢 Bottom line

Cabbage is healthy for most people, and only needs caution in:

  • thyroid disorders (excess raw intake)
  • digestive sensitivity (IBS/gas)
  • advanced kidney disease
