Aneurysm: Signs & Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Posted on April 16, 2026 by Admin

An aneurysm is an abnormal bulging or weakening in a blood vessel wall. It can occur in the brain (cerebral aneurysm), aorta (aortic aneurysm), or other arteries. The danger is that it may rupture suddenly, causing life-threatening bleeding.

⚠️ Signs & symptoms you should NOT ignore

1. Brain (Cerebral) Aneurysm — especially if leaking or rupturing

Cerebral aneurysm

Warning signs:

  • Sudden, severe headache (“worst headache of life”)
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Pain above or behind the eye
  • Drooping eyelid
  • Numbness or weakness in face or one side of body
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Seizure
  • Loss of consciousness

👉 If it ruptures (causes bleeding in the brain), symptoms come on suddenly and violently and require emergency care.

2. Aortic aneurysm (main body artery)

Aortic aneurysm

Possible symptoms before rupture (often silent until severe):

  • Deep, constant pain in chest, back, or abdomen
  • Pulsating feeling in abdomen
  • Shortness of breath

If rupture occurs:

  • Sudden tearing chest/back pain
  • Rapid drop in blood pressure
  • Fainting or collapse
  • Cold, clammy skin

3. Key danger signs (emergency warning)

Call emergency help immediately if there is:

  • Sudden extreme headache or chest/back pain
  • Collapse or loss of consciousness
  • Sudden neurological symptoms (weakness, speech trouble, vision loss)

Why aneurysms are dangerous

  • Often no symptoms until they grow large or rupture
  • Rupture leads to internal bleeding, which can be fatal within minutes to hours

Risk factors

  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Family history
  • Age (risk increases with age)
  • Certain connective tissue disorders

Bottom line

An aneurysm can be silent, but when symptoms appear, they are usually sudden, severe, and urgent. Any “worst-ever headache” or sudden chest/back tearing pain should be treated as an emergency.

If you want, I can also explain how aneurysms are detected early (scans, screening) and who should consider getting checked.
