Washing machine drawer

Posted on April 11, 2026 by Admin

A washing machine drawer (also called a detergent drawer) is the compartment where you put detergent, fabric softener, and sometimes pre-wash additives before starting a wash cycle.

🧺 What it’s used for

Most washing machine drawers have 3 main sections:

1. 🧼 Main wash compartment (usually marked “II” or “2”)

  • For regular detergent (powder or liquid)
  • Used in almost every wash

2. 🌊 Pre-wash compartment (usually marked “I” or “1”)

  • For extra dirty clothes
  • Used only if you select a pre-wash cycle

3. 🌸 Fabric softener compartment (often marked with a flower symbol 🌸)

  • For softener or conditioner
  • Released during the final rinse cycle

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Putting detergent in all sections at once
  • Overfilling softener (can cause sticky residue)
  • Not cleaning the drawer (causes mold buildup)
  • Using powder in liquid-only compartments (in some machines)

🧽 Cleaning tip (important)

Over time, drawers can get clogged with detergent and mold.

How to clean:

  1. Pull the drawer out (most slide out fully)
  2. Soak in warm water + vinegar or soap
  3. Scrub corners with an old toothbrush
  4. Rinse and dry before reinserting

💡 Bonus tip

If your clothes smell bad even after washing, the issue is often:

  • Dirty drawer
  • Clogged detergent channel
  • Low water temperature wash

If you want, tell me your washing machine brand and I can explain exactly how to use your specific drawer correctly.
