  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or sausage (optional for protein)

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 stalks celery, sliced
  • 1 can (14 oz / 400 g) diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup (240 ml) beef or vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1–2 tsp Worcestershire sauce for depth

Instructions

  1. Prepare ingredients: Chop cabbage, dice onion, slice carrots and celery.
  2. Layer in slow cooker:
    • Start with meat at the bottom (if using), then add onions, garlic, carrots, and celery.
    • Add chopped cabbage on top.
  3. Add liquids & seasoning:
    • Pour diced tomatoes, broth, and tomato paste over vegetables.
    • Sprinkle paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper. Add Worcestershire sauce if desired.
  4. Cook:
    • Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hours or high for 3–4 hours, until cabbage and vegetables are tender.
  5. Optional finishing touch:
    • Stir gently before serving to mix flavors.
    • Serve with crusty bread, mashed potatoes, or over rice for a complete meal.

Tips for Maximum Flavor

  • Brown the meat first in a skillet for richer taste.
  • Add a splash of apple cider vinegar at the end to brighten flavors.
  • For a vegetarian version, skip meat and use more beans or lentils for protein.
  • Sprinkle fresh parsley or chives on top for a fresh finish.
