Signs of a Stroke

Posted on April 4, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a clear, medically accurate guide to recognizing stroke signs — fast recognition can save lives. Remember, every minute counts.

⚠️ FAST — Key Stroke Warning Signs

A widely used mnemonic is FAST:

  1. F – Face drooping
    • One side of the face may droop or feel numb.
    • Ask the person to smile — does one side droop?
  2. A – Arm weakness
    • One arm may feel weak or numb.
    • Ask them to raise both arms — does one drift downward?
  3. S – Speech difficulty
    • Slurred speech, trouble finding words, or inability to speak.
    • Ask them to repeat a simple sentence — is it correct?
  4. T – Time to call emergency services
    • If any of these signs are present, call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately.

🔹 Other Possible Signs

  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the leg, arm, or face (especially on one side)
  • Confusion, trouble understanding speech
  • Vision problems in one or both eyes
  • Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Severe headache with no known cause

💡 Important Notes

  • Act immediately: Treatment is most effective when started within 3–4.5 hours of symptom onset.
  • Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) may cause temporary symptoms — still a medical emergency.
  • Risk factors: High blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, and atrial fibrillation increase stroke risk.
