Knee pain, swelling, or instability? It could be more

Posted on March 20, 2026 by Admin

Knee pain, swelling, or a feeling like your knee might “give way” can come from a lot of different causes—some minor, some more serious. Here are the most common possibilities so you know what to look for:

🦵 Common Causes

🔹 Ligament injuries

  • Damage to stabilizing ligaments like the ACL, MCL, or PCL
  • Often from sports, twisting, or sudden stops
  • Symptoms: instability, popping sound, swelling

🔹 Meniscus tear

  • Injury to the cartilage that cushions your knee
  • Symptoms: pain, locking, swelling, difficulty bending
  • Common with twisting motions

🔹 Osteoarthritis

  • Wear-and-tear of the joint over time
  • Symptoms: stiffness, swelling, pain that worsens with activity

🔹 Bursitis

  • Inflammation of fluid-filled sacs in the knee
  • Causes swelling and tenderness

🔹 Patellar Tendinitis

  • Overuse injury affecting the tendon below the kneecap
  • Pain especially when jumping or climbing stairs

🔹 Fluid buildup (“water on the knee”)

  • Can happen with injury or inflammation
  • Causes visible swelling and tightness

🚨 When to see a doctor

Get medical help if you have:

  • Severe pain or sudden swelling
  • Knee giving out or can’t bear weight
  • Locking (can’t fully bend/straighten)
  • Fever with swelling (possible infection)

🧊 What you can do right now

  • Rest and avoid strain
  • Ice for 15–20 minutes
  • Elevate your leg
  • Use mild pain relief (like Ibuprofen if appropriate)

🧠 Bottom line

It might be something simple like strain—or something that needs proper treatment like a ligament tear. If symptoms don’t improve in a few days or feel unstable, it’s worth getting it checked.

If you want, describe your symptoms (how it started, where it hurts, swelling, etc.), and I can help narrow it down more specifically 👍
