🧠 Human Brain

The human brain is the main organ of the central nervous system. It controls thoughts, memory, emotions, movement, breathing, and many automatic body functions. It works together with the spinal cord to send and receive signals throughout the body.

📏 Basic Facts

  • Average weight: about 1.3–1.4 kg (3 pounds)
  • Composition: about 60% fat and 40% water, proteins, and carbohydrates
  • Neurons: roughly 86 billion nerve cells
  • Uses about 20% of the body’s energy

🧩 Main Parts of the Brain

1. Cerebrum

The largest part of the brain.
Functions include:

  • Thinking and reasoning
  • Memory and learning
  • Sensory processing (touch, sight, sound)
  • Voluntary movement

The cerebrum has two halves called hemispheres (left and right).

2. Cerebellum

Located at the back of the brain.

Functions:

  • Balance and posture
  • Coordination of movement
  • Fine motor control (writing, typing)

3. Brainstem

Connects the brain to the spinal cord.

Controls automatic life-support functions, such as:

  • Breathing
  • Heart rate
  • Blood pressure
  • Swallowing and digestion

Parts include:

  • Midbrain
  • Pons
  • Medulla oblongata

🧠 Lobes of the Cerebrum

  1. Frontal Lobe
    • Decision making
    • Personality
    • Problem solving
    • Voluntary movement
  2. Parietal Lobe
    • Touch and sensory information
    • Spatial awareness
  3. Temporal Lobe
    • Hearing
    • Memory
    • Language understanding
  4. Occipital Lobe
    • Vision and visual processing

⚡ How the Brain Works

  • Brain cells called neurons send electrical signals.
  • Neurons communicate through connections called synapses.
  • Chemicals called neurotransmitters carry messages between cells.

🛡️ Protection of the Brain

The brain is protected by:

  • Skull (cranium)
  • Meninges (three protective membranes)
  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which cushions the brain

💡 Interesting Facts

  • The brain can process information at hundreds of miles per hour.
  • It remains active even during sleep.
  • Learning new things helps create new neural connections.
